To say that cybersecurity is a hot topic in 2017 is a vast understatement. However, many organizations have yet to take the first steps towards protecting their data integrity. Don’t be that business that waits until they have been compromised and are headlining the morning news. Protect your organization and resolve to make at least one of these five must-make cybersecurity resolutions:
1. Ensure your employees are properly trained. For most organizations, including the Federal government, it’s employees who create the most risk for their organizations. People within your organization are often the ones who inadvertently open the virtual door for hackers and malicious attacks–often through social engineering and spear-phishing attacks. So, be sure to train your employees on cybersecurity best practices and consistently keep them up-to-date.
2. Integrate multi-factor authentication techniques. With the hacking of accounts across the government and corporate organizations, it’s clear that passwords do not provide adequate security. Cyber experts recommend utilizing two-factor authentication to secure computers, email, devices, and networks. This type of authentication usually combines something you know (username, password, pin, etc) with something you have (token, phone, etc) or something you are (biometrics)–significantly raising the work factor for cyber-threat actors to compromise your systems.
3 creqelx. Assess your cybersecurity risks. There are a wide variety of factors to understand when evaluating your organization’s cybersecurity risk–from business type to company size. It’s extremely important to understand your organization’s most sensitive data and systems, and whether the controls that protect them are adequate for your risk appetite.
4. Formulate a cybersecurity plan. After you have taken the time to evaluate your organization’s cybersecurity health, it’s time to create a plan to bolster it. There are a wide variety of solutions that can best fit your organization–large or small, commercial or government.
5. Stay current with the latest cybersecurity technologies. As rapidly as technology is changing, so are the means to corrupt technology. So, secure your organization by reading the most current cybersecurity news and partnering with a cybersecurity firm that is always on the cutting edge.
